5. Annual meeting 2003 Davos: a success in spite of the date and distance.
The unfortunate date (during semester for most Universities) and the remote location (many hours by train or car), the annual meeting 2003 was a success. Finally there were almost 400 attendees and almost 200 abstracts. The Bernese Organising committee led by Peter Ott has managed to offer an excellent layout, in spite of the short time at its disposal. I am warmly thankful for this dedication and professionality. The team has managed to end up with a positive balance which allowed us to rescue some of the invested money.

4. Web site www.usgeb.ch
The site address has changed to the simpler WWW.USGEB.CH. I have started counting visits in March 2002 (when I have reshaped the Site). By February 21, 2003 there had been 6269 visits, by Feb 23, 2004 there have been 16448 cumulative visits. This means that in 2003 the visit rate has about doubled compared to 2002. This is good, specially since we will use the site for posting the bulletin and also to post the job searches/offers. In 2003 there have been about 40 job offers and 5 job requests. Most of these posts were filled rather rapidly. We hope that the posting on the USGEB web site was useful in assisting this recruitment. Remember: the more it is visited, the higher it comes into the search engines, the more visibility we have!
8. Bulletins: only 2 printed versions in 2003
In 2003 we have prepared the traditional 4 issues of the Bulletin. However, only two (March and December) were physically mailed and WEB posted, while the other two (June and September) were only published on the WEB. To spare money this year we will probably repeat this exercise. A small number of prints will always be available for the die-hard who want to receive a printed copy.
I remind, each print/sending action costs about 5000 Fr!!!.

öffentlichkeitsarbeit
As traditionally, the USGEB was a supporter of the 'tage der Genforschung 2003, with a generous financial sponsoring of 40000 Sfr and with concrete participation of its members to the activities.
Furthermore some public education events were also sponsored such as the Conferences series in genetic engineering in organised by the Physical society of Valais.

The USGEB was asked to express opinion on the Ordonnance for Biosafety.
Nachwuchsförderung
During this period the central USGEB has contributed over 63000 fr for congress travel/registration fees for junior members. Here below the explanatory table:
